Description
Turn “I don’t know what to write!” into “Can I make another book?” with this Make a Book Writing Center and Illustration Station!
Students choose a story, assemble a blank book, and become its author and illustrator. Each story card guides them through what to write and draw on each page, giving them a clear starting point while leaving room for creativity.
How does it work?
- Choose a story. Set out a small selection of story cards that match your students’ writing levels and interests.
- Build a blank book. The card tells students how many pages they need, plus a title page. Students staple, tape, or fold their paper into a book.
- Create the cover. Students add a title, their name, and an illustration.
- Write and illustrate. Students follow the numbered prompts on their story card. Prompt 1 goes on page 1, prompt 2 goes on page 2, and so on.
- Make another! When students finish, they choose a different story and begin a new book.
Different starting points for different writers
- Beginning kindergarten writers: Start with the A, B, and C story options.
- Kindergarten and first grade: Use stories 1–6 for additional writing support.
- More advanced writers, including second and third grade: Use stories 7–18 to develop their own stories.
Choose the options that fit your students’ needs rather than assigning them strictly by grade.
What’s included?
- 3 Story A options
- 3 Story B options
- 3 Story C options
- Numbered story cards 1–18
- 3 posters
The center supports opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing. Model the routine several times, then gradually release students to work more independently.
Prepare once and reuse throughout the year. Print and laminate the story cards, set out blank paper and book-making supplies, and rotate the story choices as students grow. Some students may spend a session creating a cover; others may finish an entire book. Each can work at a manageable pace while practicing writing and illustrating with a purpose.
